Operation Dream Closet to Brighten Prom for those in need
Operation Dream Closet is a new organization but not a new idea. Based on the organizational concepts of the national program Donate My Dress, and other similar organizations, Operation Dream Closet will provide at little or no cost prom/special occasion dresses, shoes and jewelry to girls who may not have the financial resources to purchase special occasion clothing.
Prom should be a celebration of years of friendships and hard work in high school and every girl deserves to attend and look her best. According to a 2009 Hearst Teen Survey, teen girls spend an average of $220 on a prom dress and $893 total on the prom night experience, so growing up with limited funds can make this type of event seem out of reach. Operation Dream Closet wants to help girls in rural Southwest Iowa have a great highlight of their teenage years and make every girl’s dream come true.
Jessica Wilson, owner of LONE ARRANGER, a floral and gift shop in Corning, Iowa, saw a need for this type of program in the area and is in the beginning stages of creating Operation Dream Closet in the upper story of her shop. “We are here to help girls that don’t have the means to otherwise attend their school prom or special events. We want to encourage girls around Southwest Iowa to donate these items as a way to give back and to help us build this program.”
Operation Dream Closet will enable girls to easily find where in a local market they can donate or find a dress for their occasion. Many young celebrities have gotten involved in organizations like this, including Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Brittany Snow, who have all donated dresses of their own and Wilson hopes the idea behind the program will hit home for many young ladies as they hear about it and feel compelled to help other girls have the most special night of their young lives.
Operation Dream Closet can make a big difference in many girls’ lives and thanks those who have already donated to the program. We are currently looking for other locations in Southwest Iowa to be used as drop off points. Donated items will be gathered throughout the year with the hope to be fully stocked and open for the 2013 prom season. If you have items you would like to donate, please use the Corning location at this time - LONE ARRANGER, 627 Davis Avenue. If you have questions, or would like to help or become a drop off point for Operation Dream Closet, contact Jessica Wilson at 641-322-5175.
